Sesame Workshop South Africa has hosted its inaugural 'Bond Through Play' Community Soccer Tournament on Saturday, 6 December at Safe-Hub Jabulani in Soweto, in proud collaboration with Lenmed, Safe-Hub Jabulani, and the Social Masters Champions League.
Safe-Hub brings communities and partners together in safe, vibrant spaces that support young people from early childhood through to employment. Every programme is designed to empower youth to learn, grow and realise their full potential, says Sesame Workshop.
As an extended celebration of Sesame Workshop South Africa's 25th anniversary, the event gathered over 280 parents and children from Soweto, Alexandra and Ennerdale for a day filled with football, fun and family connections. Emphasising father-child engagement, this initiative fostered safe and inclusive environments for families to bond through play, adds Sesame Workshop.
"'Bond Through Play' transcends football — it's about cultivating joyful spaces where dads, moms and children can connect and thrive," says Dr. Onyi Nwaneri, Managing Director of Sesame Workshop South Africa. "We believe these moments fortify families and cultivate stronger communities."
Research shows that involved fathers contribute significantly to cognitive, emotional and social growth of their children. "The State of South Africa's Fathers 2024 (SOSAF) report highlights that children with engaged fathers exhibit better language skills, perform well academically and are more likely to develop strong emotional resilience. Importantly, the benefits of father involvement go beyond the child — it also serves to strengthen families and communities, in the process supporting a more socially cohesive society," adds Dr. Nwaneri.
Lenmed Leads with Heart
As the principal sponsor, Lenmed played a vital role in ensuring the event's success which highlights their dedication to community upliftment and family health, says Sesame Workshop.
"Our mission is to create healthier and more prosperous communities," says Dr Morgan Mkhatshwa, Head of Social Impact at Lenmed. "Witnessing fathers actively engage with their children through sport and play was a proud moment for us. This embodies community health and wellbeing."
